The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards are here, and before the artists take the stage for what will undoubtedly be spectacular acceptance speeches and performances, they’re making their mark on the red carpet. Something about the irreverence of the award presentation, presented by MTV, pushes celebrities to throw down their guard and have a good time. It’s a far cry from the Oscars or Cannes, where Saweetie would most likely be dressed in a just-walked-the-runway Area style highlighted with gigantic, Flintstones-esque bones.
The days of Sofia Coppola in a transparent nightgown layered over tiny black knickers, Madonna in a white lace bustier dress with a ‘Boy Toy’ belt and Rose McGowan in the nude garment that puts all prior nude costumes to shame are long gone. Despite all the buzz around personal style, the 2023 VMA red carpet looks appeared to be a little more online and well-liked than in the past, but there were still some excellent individualised runway outfits from fashion queens like Anitta and Cardi B.
The star-studded performance by Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Demi Lovato, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Fall Out Boy, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Maneskin, Renée Rapp, Shakira, Sabrina Carpenter, and Future was another highlight in addition to the outstanding apparel. These six celebrities undoubtedly stole the event with their incredible attire selections, enhancing their status as fashion icons. The VMAs played up to its reputation as a showcase for elite fashion, and everyone is eagerly anticipating the next fashion extravaganza.
However, it was the red carpet looks that stole the show and left everyone talking. The celebrities showcased their impeccable fashion sense, setting trends and inspiring countless fashion enthusiasts.

NICKI MINAJ
The rapper—who dubbed herself “Barbie” long before the doll took over the globe this year—made a grand appearance on this year’s red carpet at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The star put her own romantic spin on lingerie dressing in a pale pink gown by Dolce & Gabbana, which featured a strapless satin bodysuit and a sheer lace mermaid skirt that fanned out into a circular train. A matching see-through veil with lace trim completed the look.
The rapper finished the monochromatic ensemble with floral-shaped earrings, a diamond tennis bracelet, and an array of diamond rings. Her opulent glam look included a sparkling eye look with pink shadow and sharp cat-eye liner, as well as a nude lip and extra-long bejewelled pink nails.
DOJA CAT
The rapper arrived at New Jersey’s Prudential Center wearing an Apocene dress that resembles ivory cobwebs. The sparse knit piece featured tendrils of white fabric draping across her body in spiral orb shapes, in a style not dissimilar to spiderwebs. Underneath the revealing look, she wore a pair of nude underwear.
To complete the ensemble, Doja added see-through pointed-toe pumps, diamond chandelier earrings, and glittering wraparound silver bracelets. As for her glam, she opted for bold white eye shadow, arched thin eyebrows, and a crimson manicure.
SHAKIRA
Known for her daring fashion choices, Shakira, Shakira certainly did not disappoint. She graced the red carpet in a jaw-dropping outfit that featured a liquid gold dress ahead of her milestone night, making her the centre of attention.
TAYLOR SWIFT
The singer was nominated for a whopping 11 awards. On the carpet, she turned heads in an asymmetrical gown, which oozed superstar vibes. The intricate details of the gown perfectly complemented her signature style, exuding elegance and confidence. She also wore gold grommets and sandals.
SELENA GOMEZ
The pop sensation was a lady in red! She made a bold fashion statement in a fiery red design, which consisted of a cutout floral design and high-heeled sandals. Her vibrant ensemble showcased her fearless and unique sense of style.
ANITTA
The singer exuded confidence and glamour in a show-stopping ensemble. She walked on the pink carpet wearing a two-tone, belly-baring Schiaparelli gown and vibrant earrings, which help showcase her fierce and empowering style.
